For people who tried other treatments and found that they didn\u2019t work, TCAs\u00a0may be an option to consider.<\/p>\n<p>TCAs can be used to <a href=\"https:\/\/screening.mhanational.org\/content\/how-do-you-treat-adhd\/\">treat ADHD<\/a>, as an alternative to <a href=\"https:\/\/screening.mhanational.org\/content\/stimulant-medications\/\">stimulants<\/a> [3].<\/p>\n<h2>How do TCAs work?<\/h2>\n<p>Like other mental health medications, TCAs work by restoring the balance of the chemicals in your brain. These chemicals are called <strong>neurotransmitters<\/strong>. The main neurotransmitters affected by TCAs are [4]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Serotonin<\/strong>, which affects your mood, energy level, appetite, and sleep.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Norepinephrine<\/strong>, which affects your energy level, focus, and attention.
